Even as our economy hit record lows, comic sales were going up thanks in no small part to blockbuster movies that helped boost interest in the medium again. Marvel dominated the charts, taking in 46% of sales as compared to DC's 32%. All eight issues of Secret Invasion were on the Top 10 list. The final two were Uncanny X-men #500 and DC's Final Crisis #1. Bad news for DC as no issues of their two biggest books besides Final Crisis #1. While Final Crisis can be choked up to no one liking it after the first issue, Batman R.I.P., a book that DC has been hyping for over a year failed to scratch the top 10 despite a hugely successful movie. Luckily, thanks to The Dark Knight and the overwhelmingly positive hype around The Watchmen, DC was able to take the majority of trade paperback sales. While this may have saved DC from being completely embarrassed, another Batman movie won't be out for a few years and half of their best selling paperbacks were Batman books. While these books are in fact great reads, all of them except for Brian Azzarello's Joker graphic novel are old books. It should scare DC execs that none of their new series are selling very well and the fact that they don't have any movies involving DC U characters to boost sales means it may be a very bad year for the company.
